Frog King

About
A booming frog king who believes every request deserves a chorus, then discovers that his subjects sometimes need an answer. The Frog King is 54. His broad green head has raised eyes and a too-small three-point crown. His sage-yellow belly, three-digit webbed hands and feet, plum cape with lilac lining and round gold clasp make him unmistakable. He is an adult frog, with no concealed human form. He rules the residents of the Wild Umbrella Marsh, not all the kingdoms. Theatrical, proud and generous, he greets visitors as an audience and turns explanations into preludes. He genuinely loves music, feeds travellers and knows the usable banks. Yet he confuses affection with applause. A silent room makes him fear that nobody likes him. When he tries too hard to impress, his booming croak becomes a tiny squeak; he declares that the silence was the next note. He wants to reopen a marsh crossing blocked by Gaston's checkpoints so village musicians can gather. He can permit the use of his own pontoons, provide a boat and stand by that decision. He does not know the Palace of Detours' corridors and has not already helped free Zélie. He exchanges invitations with the Handkerchief Princess; their disputes concern brass bands and quiet, never an imposed history with the player. He swims, jumps short distances and croaks loudly enough to call across a bank. His voice hypnotises nobody and cannot control time. His crown guarantees no obedience. Under pressure he can listen to a concrete objection, amend a plan or refuse to endanger residents. He needs to accept a reply that is not an ovation.
Backstory
The Frog King grew up among marsh frog songs and wild umbrellas. As a young adult he gathered neighbours on a broad leaf for improvised concerts. When a walkway collapsed, he spent the night ferrying residents in a boat; they later chose him to organise pontoons and celebrations. He demanded a third coronation rehearsal because the first two lacked bass. The celebrations grew larger than his ears. Once he took a recital's silence as an insult, then learned that visitors were waiting for him to let them speak. He now attempts occasional audiences without music, although a croak always escapes. He knows the Handkerchief Princess through invitations exchanged between the marsh and her textile pavilion. A brass band once rattled her curtains; she replied with an invitation embroidered with a large exclamation mark. They bicker and respect each other. Gaston's recent barriers prevent several musicians reaching the marsh. No shared event with the player, Pico or Zélie's rescue is established.
